This is bizarre. The last time I didn’t work for this long was grade 12 I suppose, but I was occupied by school. I worked during the summer between grades 10-12, so I think the last time I wasn’t occupied for some portion of the day for this long or slightly longer was the summer after grade 9. I have seen one of my friends, from a distance in his yard, my parents, my girlfriends parents, and obviously my girlfriend since we live together. Pretty surreal.
All this time off is also badly making me want to travel
I’ve had time to work on my truck, to do organizing and purging and cleaning I’ve been putting off for years, to get very good at meal planning and grocery shopping for at least 2 weeks, to drink a lot, and to think. It took a while, but I’ve mentally slowed down from the frenetic pace of my job, and I have a vague idea of what I want to do with myself.
I think I want to work for Parks Canada. I don’t know what, or where, but I want to be involved in preserving parkland. We’ll see how long this lasts, I change my mind a lot.

As far as gov’t jobs go, it’s not the most stable....the funding for Parks Canada depends pretty heavily on the party in power. We usually switch parties every two terms, so when it’s the conservatives turn they tend to cut funding.

Huh, I’ve been at the total opposite end, being busier at my office than ever. With the record low interest rates, the mortgage lenders have been going bonkers, therefore I’ve been swamped with appraisal orders. However, seeing as the housing market appears to be taking a dump right now, it may be a quieter summer than I’m accustomed too. I’m trying to make bank while I can, and save for the proverbial rainy day.

I’m really wishing I had the cash for a down payment, sometime soon would quite likely be a good time to buy...
My job only exists to service the film industry, so we’re mothballed for as long as we can hold out. Hopefully the industry starts back up before we have to liquidate. I’m being paid by a federal wage subsidy until mid-June, after that I have no idea.

I got my house in the last recession with an FHA loan, so a pretty minimal down payment that I sort of illegally borrowed from my mother and paid back a couple months later. Basically, I couldn’t be gifted the money and couldn’t have any large deposits in my account, but she offered to pay my bills and rent from her account for a couple months so I just wasn’t spending anything. It was a pretty last second purchase but she also felt bad that my sister and brother-in-law were gifted a conventional down payment. Looking at home and rent p rices now, she’s the only reason I can still afford to live here.

I have a pretty sizable downpayment so I am hoping soon is a good time to buy. I live at home right not d
ue to saving up for said downpayment as mom likes the company (it would just be her and the cat if I wasn’t around and she’s starting to get on in years
)
, so it would be awesome to finally get a place of my own...
Coincidentally, out neighbours across the road may be selling their house and moving later this year and it would be a perfect house for me...brand new separate garage building with workshop (major want!!!), new roof on the house, new siding, the interior is in great shape, new side deck....and the fact it is very close to mom would be great as she gets older (she’s 71 now...I’m 33, my parents had my brother and I relatively
late
compared to most folks
).

We’ve also been considering letting her parents buy for us, since they’ll get a better interest rate, and pay them instead.

That sounds like it would pretty damn perfect. My parents also had me and my sister late, I’m 25 and my dad is a couple months from 64. It means that I’m trying to plan for a place with some sort of suite, either basement or ideally a carriage house for them to retire into. They don’t have anything saved for retirement, and my sister is pursuing acting, so it’s pretty much up to me to ensure their security once they can’t work.
Now, or soon, does certainly seem like a good time to buy

I’m actually great, the only thing I can complain about is boredom. I’m waffling between putting the V70 up for sale now, in anticipation of possibly no work in June, or keeping it in case I can’t buy another winter car before winter....other than that, all is well over here. Just waiting on word about film. last I heard was hearsay from a set dec guy that producers are planning for at lease 3 more months of no shooting.

Lucky you have a place! I don’t mind living at home, but can’t wait to finally get a place of my own...
Any word on the little 500 btw? An how is the Siennamper?

Yeah, I have been keeping a close eye on the local real estate site in case their house goes up...might take a walk over if I see them out in the next few days and tell them to let me know before they put the house on the market...I have a feeling it’s going to be a lot more expensive than I want to afford (as it comes with a fair amount of land as well), but I would try for it considering the circumstances....
Being right across the road from mom would be perfect as she ages, and there’s enough land there was even talk of her selling our current house (or my brother buying it from her) and her moving into a Tiny House on some of the land of our neighbour’s house if I were to buy it...

It’s absolutely worth talking to them first to let them know you’re interested. Even if your offer isn’t quite what they want, it could very well be worth it to them for the ease of the sale, and not having to list or deal with a realtor, or pay commission to a realtor.
I’ve also been keeping an eye out for properties with two houses on them. One for me and my girlfriend, and one nearby for my parents

Nope, she works retail and retail is dead except for online. The company she works for has already closed one location permanently, so I don’t have high hopes for them making it out the other end of this...

Lol. There may eventually be a story on the 500, but I want it back in my possession first. But basically my service tech was apparently fired WEEKS ago and no one at the dealership thought that maaaaaaybe they should check his voicemail and/or follow up with his customers. But don’t worry, your current assigned technician will give you a call today (he also hasn’t returned any messages left at his direct line either). You’ll be SHOCKED at what (doesn’t) happen next!

Good
luck! And yup, will definitely ask them before they put it up for sale...mom said she could also lend me some money on top of my big downpayment, so it could all work out....I’d prob still end up with a fairly sizeable mortgage though, but we’ll see!

My favorite part was when I was trying to delicately mention that I know people have been furloughed in this economy and - “oh he was let go for PERFORMANCE ISSUES”
Oh. Ok. Well that’s information that I really didn’t need and probably isn’t legal for you to share but along those lines WHAT ABOUT MY CAR?
